Ecuador’s “Old Warrior” found a home in Buenos Aires. Here at Plazoleta Eloy Alfaro, we encounter a surprising connection between these two distant nations. Plazoleta Eloy Alfaro, a small square nestled within the bustling Palermo neighborhood, honors the legacy of José Eloy Alfaro Delgado. He was a prominent Ecuadorian politician and military leader. Alfaro served as President of Ecuador twice, from 1895 to 1901 and again from 1906 to 1911. He championed liberal reforms and modernization in Ecuador. He led the Liberal Revolution of 1895. He tirelessly fought against conservative forces for nearly 30 years, earning him the moniker “Viejo Luchador” or “Old Warrior”. Here in Plazoleta Eloy Alfaro, his legacy extends beyond Ecuador’s borders. A polyester bust of Alfaro stands proudly on a masonry base. It was a gift from the Ecuadorian Embassy. Unveiled on December 11, 1996, during the tenure of Buenos Aires Governor Fernando de la Rúa and Argentine President Carlos Menem, it symbolizes the enduring friendship between Ecuador and Argentina. Plazoleta Eloy Alfaro serves as a quiet reminder of Alfaro’s impact. He dedicated his life to the betterment of Ecuador and to the principles of liberty, justice, and equality.
