Gazing up at the imposing slopes, have you ever wondered about the secrets hidden within Gulluk Mountain National Park? This park, nestled in the Taurus Mountains northwest of Antalya, isn’t just a natural wonder. It cradles the remarkably preserved ancient city of Termessos. Established as a national park in 1970, Gulluk Mountain National Park encompasses nearly 17,000 acres. It’s a landscape of diverse beauty, from the steep cliffs of Gulluk Mountain itself to the dramatic depths of the Mecine Canyon, whose walls plunge 600 meters. The park also boasts a vibrant ecosystem, typical of the Mediterranean region.

Termessos, high on the mountain slopes, offers a glimpse into a resilient past. Founded by the Solims, an indigenous Anatolian people, the city defied Alexander the Great. He chose not to siege the strategically perched city after a minor skirmish in the surrounding passes. Later, Termessos played a pivotal role in the wars of Alexander’s successors. One general, Alcetas, trapped within the city walls, met a tragic end, betrayed and driven to suicide. His story, a testament to the city’s tumultuous history, is believed to be memorialized in the lion sarcophagus found within the ruins.

Over time, Termessos embraced Hellenistic culture, evolving into a democracy and constructing a magnificent theatre that likely served as both an entertainment venue and a political forum. The city’s strategic importance continued into the Roman era, where it earned autonomy for its loyalty. Remarkably, Termessos’s coinage never bore the image or title of Roman emperors, a symbol of its fiercely guarded independence. Many of the city’s impressive structures, including the King’s Road, Hadrian’s Gate, gymnasium, and numerous tombs, date from this period. The city was eventually abandoned between the 5th and 7th centuries. Its isolated location contributed to its exceptional preservation, allowing us to explore its streets and structures today.

Gulluk Mountain National Park isn’t just about ancient stones. It’s a haven for diverse flora and fauna. Endangered fallow deer roam its forests. Mountain goats, caracals, and lynxes navigate its rugged terrain. Golden eagles soar overhead, while numerous songbirds fill the air with music. From April to December, the park welcomes visitors to explore its trails, discover its history, and immerse themselves in its natural beauty. At the park entrance, the visitor’s center provides detailed information and resources. Camping and caravan areas offer extended stays. Restaurants and buffets cater to hungry explorers. Gulluk Mountain National Park offers a journey through time and nature, a captivating blend of history and breathtaking scenery.
