Masjid Jamiatul Khoir was built in 1906. Panembahan Mempawah Gusti Muhammad Taufiq Aqamaddin oversaw its creation. Before this magnificent structure two other mosques stood in Kampung Siantan and Kampung Brunai. This current mosque however is the third iteration. It is a stunning example of Islamic architecture. Its design reflects the strong ties between the Mempawah Sultanate and other Islamic kingdoms in South Sulawesi and Riau.
The mosque’s construction represents more than just bricks and mortar. It symbolizes the Sultanate’s deep-rooted faith. It’s also a tribute to the legacy of Upu Daeng Manambon. This figure is significant in Mempawah’s history. He came from Luwu and his influence marked the mid-18th century. The mosque stands near the Sultan’s palace. The close proximity reflects the mosque’s important role within the community. Today it is also a burial place for the Mempawah royalty.

Twenty individuals comprise the board. Twenty perfectly mirroring the 20 attributes of Allah SWT. Six core members represent the six articles of faith. Five others represent the five pillars of Islam. Thirteen assistants symbolize the components of the Salat prayer. This thoughtful arrangement highlights the profound spiritual values guiding the mosque’s governance. It was through this careful organization that the message of Islam spread. The message extended all the way to Sambas.
Masjid Jamiatul Khoir sits near the Mempawah River. Its riverside location facilitated access for worshippers. The river was the primary mode of transportation in those times.
