Ten single-bedroom residences. That’s what makes the Church Estate Almshouses so unique. Right here on Sheen Road in Richmond these charming buildings stand proudly. They are a testament to centuries of caring for the elderly. The Church Estate Almshouses weren’t always as they appear today. Their story begins much earlier than their 1843 construction date.

The charity behind the almshouses has roots stretching back to Queen Mary I’s reign. Some even believe its origins lie much further in the past. Imagine the lives lived within these walls since then. The original ten dwellings each housed two rooms. Simple but dignified homes for five elderly men and five elderly women. All members of the Church of England. They enjoyed a special privilege. Access to the chapel at nearby Hickey’s Almshouses.

In 1968 a significant change occurred. Eight more almshouses were added. Two small blocks rose behind the original building. Each held four studio apartments. A modern addition to the historic site. Then in 2005 one of these newer blocks was extended and updated. Studio apartments were converted into larger one-bedroom flats.

Today the Church Estate Almshouses are managed by The Richmond Charities. They offer a haven for residents aged 65 and above. The almshouses are a testament to the enduring spirit of charity and community. This serene space provides comfort and companionship. It’s a place where history and modern care blend seamlessly.

The tall chimneys are a distinctive feature. They punctuate the skyline and represent the enduring legacy of this historic site. The almshouses are set behind a beautiful lawn. Trees and flowerbeds frame these charming buildings perfectly. The carefully maintained gardens create a peaceful setting. It’s a place of serenity and quiet dignity. A true Richmond landmark. The Church Estate Almshouses are more than just buildings. They are a living testament to compassion and care. They represent a long tradition of providing shelter for those who need it most. They are a vital part of Richmond’s history and its future. A place of peace and quiet reflection. A hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
