Perhaps hope is the best word to describe the feeling you get standing before Greater Metropolitan Baptist Church. In 1953, Life magazine sent Gordon Parks to do a story on the church. It is located at 2151 West Washington Boulevard. Parks described Greater Metropolitan Baptist Church as a temple of hope. He felt it was a haven in a world of unending trouble for many Black people.

Greater Metropolitan Baptist Church has a rich history. It stands as a testament to faith. The church was initially named the Third Church of Christ. It was a Scientist church. Architect Hugh M.G. Garden designed it. The building was completed in 1901.

In 1947, the church found new owners. It was sold and became the Greater Metropolitan Baptist Church. The church has been a Chicago Landmark since February 16, 1989. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

The story in Life magazine never ran. Parks was both the photographer and the writer for it. He spent time with the church’s pastor Reverend Ernest Franklin Ledbetter. Parks captured Ledbetter’s outreach and support to his community. One image shows Ledbetter in prayer. He stands before his congregation with his hands raised. His palms face outward.

Today, Greater Metropolitan Baptist Church continues its mission. Pastor Michael Runnels leads the congregation. The church’s address is 5856 S. Wabash Ave. It is a “will do church” for “can do people”. They welcome all to fellowship in the word of Christ. They emphasize unity and love. The church aims to lead people to faith in Christ. They want to empower them to grow.

The Greater Metropolitan Baptist Church offers various services. Church School begins at 9:00 a.m. on Sundays. Worship service starts at 10:30 a.m. It includes music, prayer, testimonies, and the spoken word. The first Sunday of each month features the Lord’s Supper. It is followed by the Right Hand of Fellowship for new members.

Greater Metropolitan Baptist Church stands as a beacon. It symbolizes hope, community, and unwavering faith. It is a place where all are welcome. It is a place where spirits are lifted. It is a place where faith is renewed.
