“A street named after a man who fought for his beliefs” That’s Rue Mendel Kalmenson in Aubervilliers. This unassuming street holds a powerful story. It’s a story of perseverance against overwhelming odds. It’s the story of Rabbi Shalom Mendel Kalmanson.

In 1963 Rabbi Kalmanson sought permits to open a Jewish day school. Aubervilliers then a city with strong communist leanings refused. The city’s minister of education declared “In Aubervilliers there will be no private Jewish day school”. Undeterred Rabbi Kalmanson relentlessly pursued his goal. He was a survivor of communism. His conviction was unwavering. He wouldn’t give up.

He faced numerous obstacles. The city withheld land sales. They denied building permits. But Kalmanson persisted. He bought homes. He rented spaces. He housed additional classes. He even purchased a large parcel of land envisioning a new school building. Still the city blocked his efforts.

Then in 2002 Muslim extremists burned down buses parked on the vacant land. This incident brought attention to the school. The spotlight shone on Kalmanson’s struggle. The city’s mayor Jack Ralite the same man who had initially opposed the school now signed the building permits. It was a remarkable turnaround.

The new Chne-Or Day School was completed in 2003. Kalmanson despite being in his eighties had finally prevailed. Today the school boasts 650 students. His legacy lives on. His daughter Haya Nisilevitch now directs the school.

After Kalmanson’s passing in 2011 Aubervilliers Mayor Jacques Salvator proposed naming a street after him. The city council approved the proposal. Rue Mendel Kalmenson stands as a testament to his dedication. It’s a tribute to his fight for Jewish education. It’s a reminder that perseverance can overcome even the most formidable opposition. This quiet street in Aubervilliers echoes the strength and determination of one man’s lifelong commitment. His story is one of resilience hope and ultimate triumph. A story worth remembering as you walk down Rue Mendel Kalmenson.
