A sanctuary for quiet contemplation. That’s what St George’s Anglican Church offers. Located in Travancore this church is a peaceful haven. It sits just four kilometres from Melbourne’s central business district.

St George’s Anglican Church was opened for worship in 1925. Architect Louis Williams designed the church. The building incorporates windows from the original church in Royal Park.

Williams had big plans. He envisioned a large church. It would have a tower, church hall and vicarage. However, the church was never fully built. A combined church and hall now serves the congregation.

St George’s is more than just a building. It is a welcoming community. The church offers regular services and special events. Concerts are held here. Baptisms, weddings, and funerals take place within these walls. You can even send in prayer requests for support. The community follows weekly prayers and readings.

Now let’s turn our attention to the organ. It is a significant feature of St George’s Anglican Church. Robert Mackenzie built this pipe organ. In 1875 he also installed the organ in the Melbourne Town Hall. After being used in various places the organ came to St George’s in 1982. The Organ Historical Trust of Australia values this organ. They consider it the only largely intact example of Mackenzie’s work.

Mackenzie was a notable figure. Born in England around 1840 he died in Adelaide in 1905. He trained as an organ builder and worked with renowned firms. These included Hill & Son, Henry Willis and Gray & Davison. In the late 1871s Mackenzie moved to Melbourne. He came to erect the Town Hall organ. He built ten new organs in Victoria and South Australia. He also worked on numerous others. Mackenzie erected new organs in four Australian states. These organs were exported from England. His major work was the organ at The Scots’ Church in Melbourne.

The organ at St George’s Anglican Church has a history. It was initially built for Christ Church Anglican Church in Castlemaine in 1875. A new organ displaced it in 1888. Later it was placed in Baptist churches in West Melbourne and Greensborough. Finally it arrived at Travancore in 1981.

This organ retains its original mechanical manual key. The stop action is also mechanical. The pedal action is now tubular-pneumatic.

St George’s Anglican Church stands as a testament to history. It represents community. It is a place for quiet reflection. Its architecture and the story of its organ weave a rich narrative. As you leave consider the layers of history within these walls. Remember the people who built and cherished this space. It is more than just a church. It is a living story.
