Gazing upon the Iglesia San Juan Bosco, one can’t help but wonder about the stories held within its walls. This church, a testament to faith and perseverance, stands as a beacon of hope in Mexico City. The Iglesia San Juan Bosco’s history is deeply intertwined with the Salesian order. They arrived in Mexico in 1892, carrying their mission from Italy. The cornerstone was laid in 1897, the vision a Romanesque masterpiece. However, the path to completion was fraught with challenges. Construction, halted in 1899, resumed briefly in 1906 with an iron framework. The Mexican Revolution then interrupted progress, leaving the structure a mere six meters high by 1925. The government, under Lázaro Cárdenas, seized the Salesians’ property rights after the Cristero Wars. The Salesians wouldn’t regain control until 1950. During this time, the Chapel of Merced de las Huertas served the parish. Finally, in 1954, construction recommenced under the guidance of architect Vicente Mendiola. He revived the original 1905-06 designs by Italian architect Adrián Giombini Montanari. Mendiola, known for his work on the Petroleo’s monument and the Diana the Huntress fountain, brought his expertise to the Iglesia San Juan Bosco. Inside, a breathtaking 3.6-meter-high image of the Virgin, crafted by renowned sculptor Ernesto Tamáriz, commands attention. Tamáriz also designed the angels flanking the access stairs. These angels, added in 1992, a year after his death, completed the church 95 years after its inception. The Iglesia San Juan Bosco stands as a symbol of resilience. It is a reminder that even amidst turmoil and setbacks, faith and dedication can prevail. Its story is an integral part of Mexico City’s vibrant tapestry.
