What if a goldsmith’s legacy shaped the destiny of countless children? Right here, at George Heriot’s School, that’s exactly what happened. George Heriot’s School stands as a testament to the vision of George Heriot, a royal goldsmith. He bequeathed his fortune in 1624 to establish a “hospital,” not a medical one, but a charitable school. He envisioned a place where “puir, faitherless bairns” and children of “decayit” families could receive an education. George Heriot’s School opened its doors in 1659. The school initially housed thirty sickly children. Over time, its financial prosperity allowed it to expand and accommodate more pupils. The architecture of George Heriot’s School is stunning. The main building is a masterpiece of Renaissance design. It was the first large structure built outside Edinburgh’s city walls. Interestingly, parts of the old seventeenth-century Telfer Wall actually form some of the school’s boundaries. Initially, the front faced north, toward the Grassmarket, accessible by Heriot Bridge. The intricate details above each window are unique, showcasing the craftsmanship of the time. A statue of George Heriot sits in a niche on the north side of the quadrangle. Did you know that the school was occupied by Oliver Cromwell’s forces during the Third English Civil War? They even stabled their horses in the chapel! The school’s history is filled with fascinating tales. In 1846, a student uprising resulted in the dismissal of fifty-two boys. This event sparked debate about the value of “hospital” education. Critics argued that it separated children from their families, while supporters praised its ability to provide hope and discipline. George Heriot’s School has played a pivotal role in education reform in Scotland. It established a network of free “outdoor” schools throughout Edinburgh in the 19th century, educating thousands of pupils. The school itself transitioned into a fee-paying day school for boys in 1885, but continued to offer preferential admission to foundationers. Girls were finally admitted in 1979. Today, George Heriot’s School continues to honor its founder’s legacy. It provides free education to children who have lost a parent, known as “foundationers”. It has a vibrant student body of around 1600 pupils. It offers a wide range of academic and extracurricular activities. George Heriot’s School. More than just a school, it is a living embodiment of one man’s generosity. A place where history and education intertwine to shape future generations.
