What would bring a king to such a brutal end? We stand before St. Edmund the King church. This place commemorates a ruler who met a tragic fate. St. Edmund the King was not just any king; he was the King of East Anglia in the 9th century. His reign coincided with a terrifying period – the Viking invasions of England. St. Edmund was a devout Christian, known for his piety and righteous rule. But his faith would be tested when the fearsome ‘Great Heathen Army’ led by the Viking Ivar the Boneless, set their sights on East Anglia. Ivar, notorious for his brutality, offered Edmund a choice: submit to Viking rule and renounce his Christian faith, or face the consequences. Edmund, it is said, refused outright. He chose his faith over his life, a decision that sealed his fate. Edmund was captured. The Vikings, enraged by his defiance, tied him to a tree. They shot arrows at him until he resembled, as one account vividly describes, ‘a hedgehog’. Finally, they beheaded him. St. Edmund the King’s death, though gruesome, became a symbol of resistance against the Vikings, his name whispered alongside tales of courage and martyrdom.
