Is it possible for a building to chronicle the very soul of a city? Catedral São João Batista embodies Niterói’s evolving spirit. It mirrors its journey through time. This cathedral is more than stone. It is a testament to faith, resilience, and community.

Let’s step back to 1660. A humble chapel was founded in Icaraí. This marked the beginning of what would become the Catedral São João Batista. The original chapel resided on the Morro de Santa Tereza. It overlooked the Campo da Fazenda do Mosteiro de S. Bento.

In 1696, the parish was officially established by Alvará. Padre Miguel Luís Freire became its first Vigário Colado. He took possession the following year. The Irmandade de São João Batista was founded in 1742. It is now known as the Irmandade do Santíssimo Sacramento da Freguesia de São João Batista de Niterói.

Imagine the scene in 1744. The chapel’s choir collapsed. The image of São João Batista was moved. It was first taken to the Errmida de Nossa Senhora das Necessidades. This is the site of the current Igreja de N. S. do Rosário. Later, it was moved to the more central parish of N. S. da Conceição. The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição was expanded. This expansion accommodated the image of São João Batista. This gave rise to the Paróquia de São João Batista in Niterói.

By December 28, 1744, the work was completed. The image of the Patron Saint and the baptismal font were moved there. Manoel Rodrigues Carvalho secured the land donation. Brigadeiro Manoel Alves da Fonseca Costa and his wife made the donation on March 29, 1821.

Niterói became Vila Real da Praia Grande in 1819. Plans emerged to construct a new main church. In 1831, under Vigário Padre Tomaz de Aquino, the new temple was blessed. The Santíssimo Sacramento and images from the Igreja de N.S. da Conceição were moved.

Construction of the current Catedral São João Batista began in 1842. Niterói had become the capital of the Province of Rio de Janeiro 11 years prior. The Marquês do Paraná, then President of the Province, requested funds.

By 1854, the works were completed. The image was moved to the new temple. Emperor Dom Pedro II attended the blessing of the temple. This occurred during an official visit to Niterói. The Catedral São João Batista was finally completed in 1885.

The Catedral São João Batista has witnessed tumultuous times. It was bombed during the Armada Revolt between 1891 and 1894. In 1908, it was consecrated as a cathedral by Bishop Dom Agostinho Francisco Benassi. Electric lighting was inaugurated in 1911.

In 1929, the Italian artist Colossi decorated the interior. This cost 120 contos de reis. The current high altar was inaugurated on July 26, 1942. Dom José Pereira Alves consecrated it.

The Catedral São João Batista’s organ was built by Guilherme Berner. It was inaugurated on June 22, 1947. Authorities and the public attended the event. Padre Paulo Consolini remodeled the Capela do Santíssimo Sacramento. The entire nave underwent several renovations throughout the 20th century.

From 2010 to 2012, the Archdiocese of Niterói undertook a complete restoration. Padre Wallace Dahan oversaw this restoration.

Dom Carlos Alberto Etchandy Gimeno Navarro envisioned a new cathedral for Niterói in 1996. Oscar Niemeyer designed it. This project represented faith and devotion for the Catholic community. Mayor Jorge Roberto Silveira’s support was crucial. The cornerstone was laid in 1999.

Foundation work began in 2016. The foundation was completed in 2019. Construction of the slab and arch supports followed. In 2022, the final phase included structural walls and the presbytery wall. As of 2024, work continues on the 17 slab cloths.

The Catedral São João Batista stands as a symbol of Niterói. It represents the city’s past and future. Its stones echo with centuries of prayers. Its walls have witnessed history unfold. As you stand before it, remember you are not just seeing a building. You are experiencing the heart of a community.
