Dreamt of time travel? Look no further. Standing before you is the Auckland Chief Post Office. It’s more than just a building. It’s a portal to Auckland’s past.

The Chief Post Office stands proudly at the foot of Queen Street. It marks the importance of postal service. It was a state-run network for public welfare. It was also a vital hub for communication.

Imagine this place bustling with activity in 1912. Prime Minister William Massey opened the building. A crowd of 8,000 to 10,000 people attended. The Chief Post Office was more than a post office. It was the heart of Auckland’s transport system. Ferries, trams, and trains all converged here. Commercial wharves lined the waterfront.

Picture announcements being made from its steps. Envision important visitors arriving in New Zealand. Feel the somber farewells as soldiers marched off to war. The Chief Post Office was a stage for Auckland’s most significant moments.

Over time, the Chief Post Office fell into disuse. It became a rabbit warren of corridors and offices. The threat of demolition loomed large. The building was saved when the railway extended into the city center in 2003. It was converted into ticketing and access facilities for Britomart Station.

Fast forward to 2017. The Chief Post Office closed for four years. A complex engineering feat began. The goal? To build City Rail Link tunnels beneath it. Original support columns blocked the way. The building’s weight had to be transferred. Temporary foundations were constructed. This protected the Category A-listed heritage building.

Imagine the challenge. Workers excavated reclaimed land below sea level. The Waitematā Harbour was just across the road. The weight of 14,000 tonnes of masonry pressed down. Engineers installed 340 tonnes of steel beams. These spanned new piles on either side of the tunnels. The Chief Post Office’s weight shifted. Permanent reinforced concrete foundations rose beneath it.

The Chief Post Office reopened on April 6, 2021. Elders from Tāmaki Makaurau Iwi led a morning blessing. The interior was meticulously restored. Distinctive curved skylights and original building materials shine again. Building columns old and new are a feature. Clay and glass artifacts were unearthed. Remains of the first Queen Street Wharf will be part of Britomart Station.

The opening of Te Komititanga in front of the Chief Post Office is a sign of the times. It provides safer access to Britomart station. It offers more space for people.

The Chief Post Office stands as a symbol of resilience. It represents innovation. It embodies Auckland’s history. It’s a reminder of our past and a gateway to our future. Take a moment to appreciate this iconic building. It has stood the test of time. It continues to serve as a vital part of Auckland.
