Nestled between Porte du Pré-Saint-Gervais and Porte des Lilas, Église Notre-Dame-de-Fatima stands as a testament to a city’s hope. It’s more than just a church. It’s a symbol of Paris spared. In 1944, Cardinal Suhard made a vow. If Paris survived the war, a church would rise. A beacon of gratitude to the Virgin Mary. Église Notre-Dame-de-Fatima fulfills that promise. Constructed between 1951 and 1954, architect Henri Vidal brought the vision to life. Originally dedicated to Notre-Dame-Médiatrice de toutes Grâces, its story took an unexpected turn. The surrounding neighborhood envisioned in the urban plan never materialized. The church stood isolated. The nearby périphérique, a roaring concrete river, further separated Église Notre-Dame-de-Fatima from the community. Its doors closed in 1974. Silence descended. Yet, hope rekindled in 1988 with the construction of the Robert-Debré Hospital. The church reopened. Its purpose redefined. Cardinal Lustiger entrusted Église Notre-Dame-de-Fatima to the Portuguese community of Paris. It was renamed Notre-Dame-de-Fatima-Marie-Médiatrice. Inside, the church blends simplicity with subtle elegance. A single nave stretches beneath a barrel vault. Gabriel Loire’s non-figurative stained glass windows cast a serene glow of blue and yellow. The concrete walls, adorned with imitation stonework, echo the artistic vision. A 58-meter campanile reaches skyward, balanced by a smaller “lantern of the dead” tower. Even the baptistery, housed in a small turret, reflects a historical touch. A reminder of when baptisms took place outdoors. Église Notre-Dame-de-Fatima is more than architecture. It is a living testament to faith, resilience, and community. A unique blend of French and Portuguese heritage. A place where whispered prayers and vibrant hymns mingle. A symbol of Paris enduring, always.
