“A chapel born from a barn? How peculiar!” you might think as we stand before the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Montmélian. It seems unassuming now, but this chapel holds a story that is anything but ordinary. The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Montmélian stands atop the Montmélian hill, a replacement for a much grander church. The original pilgrimage church had weathered the storms of the French Revolution but met its demise in the years that followed, sold piece by piece. In 1801, a local man named Louis Poutrel, a man of deep faith, took it upon himself to salvage what he could. He transformed his own barn, a humble structure, into a sanctuary for the faithful. It was meant to be a temporary solution, a place where the precious treasures of the old church, including a beautiful altarpiece, could find refuge. And so it became, a place for the community to gather, to worship, and to keep the spirit of the pilgrimage alive. The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Montmélian served as a pilgrimage site until 1856. It even earned a second name, the Chapelle de Péguy, after the renowned poet Charles Péguy. He spent a whole night here, a night of reflection, on the eve of his departure for the front lines of World War I, where he tragically lost his life. This simple chapel, built from a barn, resonated with the soul of a poet, a testament to its quiet power. Finally, in 1938, the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Montmélian underwent a much-needed restoration, ensuring that its story could continue to be told.
