775 AD marks Obervellmar’s first documented mention. A Hersfeld monastery held possessions in Filmare a name possibly referring to Obervellmar. This quiet village nestled six kilometers northwest of Kassel grew. It developed around its church. This church a testament to time boasts a late Gothic west tower. Built in the 15th century its nave was renovated in 1616 then expanded in 1824 in a classicist style. Obervellmar’s strategic location near the Ahne river and major roadways added to its importance. The construction of railway lines through Obervellmar beginning in 1848 further strengthened its connections. Imagine the villagers watching the first steam trains puffing through. The arrival of the RegioTram and Kurhessenbahn further cemented Obervellmar’s place as a transportation hub. For a time under Napoleonic rule Obervellmar even served as the administrative center of a canton. The town played a significant role in the American Revolution. Seventeen men from Obervellmar fought. Their contributions often overlooked are part of Obervellmar’s rich but untold history. The village’s growth continued. In 1970 Obervellmar voluntarily merged with Vellmar creating the larger municipality we know today. This act reflects the close-knit community spirit of Obervellmar. Today Obervellmar is the largest district of Vellmar. It houses the town hall and administrative offices. A bustling area with a school a Gesamtschule and a kindergarten it is a vibrant part of the community. Despite the closure of the Bürgerhaus due to asbestos contamination in 2011 Obervellmar thrives.
