“Taht Kadısı,” a title echoing through Istanbul’s history. It signified the judge of the throne. Here before us stands the Taht Kadısı Cami. It is also known as Tahta Kadı Camii or Kadı Mehmet Efendi Mescidi. This mosque carries whispers of sultans and scholars.

Let’s delve into the story of this special mosque. It stands in Kasımpaşa Küçük Piyale neighborhood. Its address is Tahtkadısı Street. The Taht Kadısı Cami was commissioned by Mehmet Efendi. He was Fatih Sultan Mehmet’s judge in 1460. He was not just any judge. He was the “Taht Kadısı” himself. This meant he was a magistrate of the Istanbul Courts. Back then the term was used with this meaning. The public embraced this title as Tahta Kadı. Mehmet Efendi passed away in 1468. He was buried in the mosque’s garden.

The Taht Kadısı Cami has faced trials. In 1892, a fire damaged the mosque. Thankfully, it was revived in 1895. Bozcaadalı Hasan Hüseyin Pasha, the naval minister, led the restoration.

The mosque’s minber was placed by a man named Abacı Yusuf Ağa. The walls are made of stone. The roof and minber are wooden. Over the years, the Taht Kadısı Cami underwent repairs. It covers an area of 80 square meters. It was built on a 200 square meter plot.

The single minaret features one balcony. Its lower section is made of stone and brick. While it has been renovated, the Taht Kadısı Cami still holds historical significance. It reminds us of Mehmet Efendi. He was Fatih Sultan Mehmet’s trusted judge. He rests peacefully in its grounds.

The Taht Kadısı Cami is more than bricks and mortar. It is a testament to faith and Ottoman legacy. As we stand here, let us reflect on the centuries of history. This building has witnessed sultans, fires and rebirths. It embodies the enduring spirit of Istanbul.
