What if walls could whisper the stories of ambition, innovation, and transformation? Here at the Universidade Veiga de Almeira (UVA), the walls do just that. The UVA isn’t just a university. It’s a testament to the enduring power of one man’s dream. Professor Mario Veiga de Almeida started by teaching children to read in 1933. He later founded the Colégio Sagrado Coração de Jesus in 1937, followed by the Colégio Veiga de Almeida in the 1950s. His vision extended beyond primary education. In 1972, he established the Escola de Engenharia Veiga de Almeida, initially offering Civil and Electrical Engineering. This was the seed that would blossom into the UVA. The university officially gained its status in 1992, a significant milestone marking decades of dedication to education. The UVA expanded beyond engineering. It now encompasses a wealth of disciplines, from the arts and humanities to health sciences and technology. The university boasts campuses in Rio de Janeiro and Cabo Frio, serving approximately 30,000 students. In 2011, the UVA became part of the Rede Ilumno, a network of universities in Latin America. This marked a new chapter, connecting UVA to a broader community of scholars and learners. While the university has evolved, it remains committed to its founder’s principles of providing quality education and promoting human development. Even Professor Veiga de Almeida’s passing in 1995 couldn’t extinguish the flame he ignited. His family and colleagues continued to nurture his vision. They championed his commitment to community engagement and creating opportunities for students. The UVA embraces innovation, evidenced by its maker methodology and commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Students aren’t just learning theories; they’re actively engaged in creating solutions for real-world problems. They’re using cutting-edge technology in makerspaces and collaborating with businesses to gain practical experience. The Universidade Veiga de Almeira stands as a beacon of knowledge and innovation. It’s a place where ambition meets opportunity, a place where dreams take flight.
