“Shell collectors paradise” is a phrase that springs to mind when you first set eyes on Rarawa. Rarawa Beach, a hidden gem, awaits us on the east coast of Northland. This remote and isolated beach promises an unforgettable getaway.

Rarawa is located in the Paxton Point Conservation Area. It’s close to Ninety Mile Beach and Cape Reinga. The scenic highway from Ahipara or Kaitaia adds to the adventure.

Friends of Rarawa Beach is a community group that works hard to improve the dunes. They look after the dotterels through dune planting, alongside local schools. The Northland Regional Council supports them.

The beach walk starts at the day visitor parking. Follow the marked paths through the pine forest. It continues through the river and sand dunes to the dazzling white sandy beach of Rarawa.

Bird watchers favour this remote campsite. Visitors seeking a quiet outdoor space love it too. Native pingao and spinifex plants thrive in the natural dune ecosystem. Birds nest among the dunes from August to March. New Zealand dotterels and variable oystercatchers are vulnerable. Dogs and people can unintentionally disturb nest sites.

Swimming is safe in the lagoon at high tide here at Rarawa. But care is needed on the exposed beach due to rip currents. Rarawa Beach is known for its clear blue shallow water. Rocky headlands at each end provide protection from the wind. The high percentage of silica means sunglasses are useful on sunny days.

The Department of Conservation camping grounds are along the river bank. Mature trees provide shade. The beach track is 250 metres. This gives campers a beachside camping experience at Rarawa.

Rarawa is a popular place for shell collectors. Ocean currents bring faraway bounty to the foreshore. The beach is littered with shells.

Surfers will find a punchy and fun wave. Several peaks offer both right and left handers. It is good for all levels of surfer. The optimal swell direction is NE. The optimal wind direction is SW.

Consider visiting Cape Reinga lighthouse and Te Paki Sand Dunes. Sand boarding and coastal walks are popular. Rarawa is best visited from September to mid-May. Remember to carry sunscreen in January and February.

Northland has warm humid summers and mild wet winters. Prevailing south-west winds are common. Rainfall varies. Winter is the wettest season. The driest months are January and March.

Soak in Rarawa’s beauty. Remember the efforts to protect its natural wonders. Rarawa is more than just a beach. It is a sanctuary.
