Built of cut stone Kaptanpaşa Camii stands proudly in Istanbul’s Eyupsultan district. Its square plan is a testament to its enduring strength. The mosque’s history is rich and layered. It wasn’t always known as Kaptanpaşa Camii. Other names appear in historical records. These include Büyük İskele Cevri Kalfa and Hacılar Camii.

The original builder was a Georgian man named Mahmut Ağa. He constructed the mosque during the reign of Sultan Selim II. The exact dates are uncertain. Its location is significant. The mosque faces the Haliç. To the left is a park. A short walk away lies the Eyupsultan İskelesi.

Kaptanpaşa Camii has undergone numerous renovations. Its current form largely dates back to the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II. Hasan Hüseyin Pasha a 23-year Navy Minister oversaw these renovations. During recent restorations a remarkable discovery was made. A painted ship’s image was uncovered. Hidden beneath layers of paint and plaster it depicted Hasan Hüseyin Pasha’s own vessel. The original painting was preserved. It’s now on display in the mosque’s son cemaat area.

The entrance to Kaptanpaşa Camii is unique. Two staircases lead up to it. They meet at a small platform. From there a wooden door leads into the prayer hall. Beneath the mosque are two ablution areas. This is a testament to the meticulous planning of the builders.

The street on which Kaptanpaşa Camii sits has several interesting features. It leads to the Eyüp Sultan Camii a short distance away. It also abounds with tombs and sarcophagi. These silent witnesses bear testament to the long history of the area. It’s a testament to the rich cultural heritage of this corner of Istanbul. Visit Kaptanpaşa Camii. Feel its history.
