Did you know that Musholla Al Ma’muriah started as a small surau? This humble beginning paved the way for a place of great significance. Let’s uncover the story of this unique prayer space right here in Jakarta.

The Al-Ma’mur Mosque, as it is sometimes known, has a rich history that stretches back over a century. It began as a surau in 1890. The renowned painter Sjarif Boestaman or Raden Saleh built it. It is located on Jalan Raden Saleh Raya Nomor 30 in Cikini.

Imagine this small prayer house bustling with activity. It became a meeting point for prominent national figures. Agus Salim, HOS Tjokroaminoto, and KH Mas Mansyur gathered here. It was more than just a place of worship. It was a hub for intellectual and political discourse.

Ira Latief a Creative Jakarta Travel Guide said it. “This was originally a surau and was finally renovated or updated.” The building is dominated by white black and green colors. As you step inside you will notice that all the doors still use strong old teak wood with carvings on the front.

Look around at the floors. They still feature the gray and cream-colored colonial-era tiles with carvings. Green carpets now cover the floors in preparation for prayer. The old-fashioned ornaments are still visible. A large clock sits in the corner of the mosque. The pulpit has a unique feel reminiscent of the sunan.

The Musholla Al Ma’muriah stands as a testament to Jakarta’s layered past. It is a place where faith history and community intertwine.
