Whispers of saints and storms greet you at Crkva Sv Tripun. This isn’t just any church. It’s a place steeped in history. A place where legends intertwine with faith. Crkva Sv Tripun stands as a testament to devotion and resilience. Its very stones echo centuries of prayers and celebrations.
The church was originally built in 809. This was to house the relics of Saint Tryphon. Legend has it that the relics were destined for Dubrovnik. However a storm diverted the ship to Kotor. This is why Kotor claims Saint Tryphon as its patron saint. Not Dubrovnik.
The initial structure was modest. A Greek cross shape with a dome. But this humble beginning did not last. Earthquakes and the passage of time necessitated renovations. A new cathedral was built between 1124 and 1166. This one reflecting the architectural styles of southern Italy. It incorporated Romanesque and Baroque elements. The bell towers remain a striking feature. The left tower stands slightly shorter than the right. A lack of funds prevented its completion.
The interior is breathtaking. There’s the gilded-silver bas-relief altar screen. This is considered Kotor’s most valuable treasure. A masterpiece of 18th-century craftsmanship. Admire also the Golden Altarpiece. It showcases Christ the Virgin Mary Saint John the Baptist and Saint Tryphon. This remarkable piece was created by Kotor’s skilled goldsmiths in the 15th century. A wooden crucifix dating to 1288 is a poignant reminder of the cathedral’s enduring legacy.
Beyond the altar screen is the treasury. It holds the relics of Saint Tryphon himself. The treasury’s construction dates back to 1652. It safeguards numerous precious artifacts. These include examples of traditional dress and weaponry. The relics are the focus of a yearly procession. This is on February 4. The procession winds through the old town.
