Listen closely to the tale of Budapest’s Belvárosi Szent Mihály-templom. Its story is intertwined with the city itself. The Belvárosi Szent Mihály-templom stands as a testament to faith and resilience. It is a beacon of history in the heart of Budapest.

This church’s roots go way back to the 13th century. Around 1230 Dominican friars established a monastery and church. This original structure suffered destruction during the Tatar invasion. Yet like a phoenix, it rose again. In 1308 a pivotal assembly met here. They chose Charles Robert as king within these very grounds.

Centuries passed and turmoil came again. In 1541 the Ottomans captured the city. The church fell into ruin. After the Turks were driven out the Dominicans returned. Between 1700 and 1765 they rebuilt. This time the Belvárosi Szent Mihály-templom emerged in the Baroque style you see today.

However its trials were not over. In 1784 Joseph II dissolved the Dominican order. For a short time the Paulines took over. Soon after in 1787 the English Ladies took possession. They ran schools here until 1950. For decades the English Ladies shaped young minds next to the Belvárosi Szent Mihály-templom.

After World War II the Szent Jobb or Holy Right Hand was returned to Hungary. It was kept in the Belvárosi Szent Mihály-templom. The English Ladies order guarded this sacred relic. They kept it safe until their dissolution in 1950.

The Belvárosi Szent Mihály-templom has faced natural disasters too. The great flood of 1838 saw the Danube’s waters rise two meters inside. Fires in 1809 damaged the roof and towers.

Restoration efforts have been constant. In 1892 the interior was renovated. From 1964 to 1968 a larger restoration took place. In 1997 and 1998 the exterior got a complete makeover. The sanctuary was restored between 1998 and 2006. The sacristy followed from 2006 to 2008.

Art thrives within the Belvárosi Szent Mihály-templom. Children’s biblical art often adorns its walls. Since 2004 the Liszt Ferenc choir has performed here. They offer free and ticketed concerts weekly from Easter to December.

The church’s Rieger organ dates back to 1892. Its renovation began in 2007. Paulus Frigyes a master organ builder is overseeing the work.

Today the Belvárosi Szent Mihály-templom continues to serve. Since 2014 a traditional Latin mass community has thrived. Since 2017 a Ukrainian community holds regular Greek Catholic services. The Premonstratensian Abbey of Gödöllő officially took over pastoral care in 2018.

Take a moment to appreciate the Belvárosi Szent Mihály-templom. It is not just a building. It is a living chronicle of Budapest’s heart and soul.
