Have you ever seen a windmill that’s older than most of Copenhagen itself? Fuglevad Windmill stands proudly before us. It’s not just any windmill. This smock mill is a unique piece of history. Built in 1832 by Johan Jørgen Lund it’s the only structure at the Frilandsmuseet open-air museum still in its original location.

The museum opened in 1901. Imagine the journey this mill has witnessed. It wasn’t always here though. Lund wasn’t the first to utilize this spot. A watermill stood here as early as 1492. The watermill had its ups and downs. It changed ownership several times over the centuries. It even served as a sharpening mill for scythes under the ownership of Laurids Nørnberg in the 18th century.

The watermill eventually proved unreliable. The Møllean river sometimes lacked sufficient water to power the mill. Smart move by Lund then to add a wind-powered counterpart. This is our Fuglevad Windmill a clever addition to ensure a steady supply of flour. This resourceful millwright cleverly provided for the community’s bread.

This remarkable smock mill is a testament to ingenuity. It continued operating until the early 20th century. Then it was integrated into the Frilandsmuseet. Now you can visit it and enjoy its fascinating history. Picture the sails turning the millstones grinding grain. Perhaps even smell the fresh flour being produced.

So here we stand beside Fuglevad Windmill. A story of resilience. A story of adaptation. A story of ingenuity and community. This is a landmark worthy of our appreciation. Let’s move on to the next chapter of our tour.
