The Highams Park & Chingford Synagogue was founded in 1932. It started in Castle Avenue in Walthamstow. Five years later, in 1937 it moved to its own premises. These premises were on Marlborough Road in Walthamstow. This is where we are now.
The Highams Park & Chingford Synagogue is an Ashkenazi Orthodox synagogue. It is affiliated with the United Synagogue. This affiliation connects it to a larger network. The United Synagogue has cemeteries in several locations. These include East Ham, West Ham, and Waltham Abbey.

The Highams Park & Chingford Synagogue plays a vital role for the local Jewish Community. Less than a year after facing potential closure it has thrived. The synagogue upgraded to full member status of the United Synagogue. Steven Strum is the chair of the new board of management. He called the move a no-brainer. Despite initial reservations from some long-time members the decision was clear. The board recognized the benefits of the United Synagogue’s support.
The synagogue’s membership is around 200 people. Mr. Strum and Rabbi Avromi Kahan work together. They aim to introduce activities. These activities are designed to enhance community spirit. They want to encourage more people to attend services. Their efforts have already shown positive results. Shabbat morning service numbers are increasing. The Highams Park Synagogue held its first communal Seder in 30 years. It attracted over 50 participants.
The synagogue’s leadership is focused on growth and stability. According to Steven Strum they are moving forward. He is committed to keeping the synagogue going.
