Step into the vibrant heart of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Before you stands the Chinese Community Church a beacon of faith and resilience. Its story begins not here but across the Pacific Ocean. In the 1800s a unique Baptist movement flourished in Guangzhou China. This movement championed self-governance self-propagation and self-support. A truly revolutionary concept for its time.

This ethos traveled across the ocean with Rev Tsai Leong Lee. He established the Chinese Independent Baptist Church of San Francisco in 1905. This was a momentous occasion. It marked the founding of the first Chinese church in San Francisco. It was one of the first in the entire nation established by indigenous Chinese Christians. Initially they met in rented quarters on Clay Street a humble beginning for this future powerhouse of faith.

Then came the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. It devastated the city including their meeting place. The congregation temporarily split. Some moved to Oakland others stayed in San Francisco. Despite the destruction faith persevered.

The San Francisco group acquired property on Washington Street in 1913. Their new church building a testament to their unwavering spirit was completed in 1922. The Oakland group followed suit acquiring land in 1963 and building their own church. In 1967 the two congregations became independent entities the Chinese Independent Baptist Church of San Francisco and its Oakland counterpart.

Over the years the Chinese Community Church in San Francisco expanded its reach. It established missions points in the Sunset District and Marin County. These later became thriving churches in their own right. The church also actively supported missionaries worldwide sending both long-term and short-term mission teams.

In 1972 a new English congregation was formed. It served the English-speaking population of Chinatown. After a brief hiatus the English service resumed in 1986 and continues to this day. This demonstrates a remarkable adaptability to the changing demographics of Chinatown.

The year 2003 saw a major commitment. The church resolved to remain in Chinatown. They undertook an ambitious project a four-story addition and a major renovation. The $2.4 million project was completed debt-free in 2010. The new building aptly named the “Faith Building” stands as a monument to their faith and perseverance.

In 2019 the church joined the Southern Baptist Convention strengthening its ties within the larger Christian community. It remains a member of the Northern California Chinese Baptist Association and The Chinese Baptist Fellowship of the United States and Canada. The Chinese Community Church is more than a building. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of the Chinese community in San Francisco. Its story continues to unfold a testament to their commitment to “Know Christ and Make Him Known beginning in San Francisco Chinatown.
