Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Buenos Aires lies the Capilla Jesús Buen Pastor. A sanctuary born from compassion and resilience. The Capilla Jesús Buen Pastor’s story begins in 1885. A group of nuns from the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd sought refuge in Buenos Aires. They had fled Montevideo due to restrictive laws. These women, inspired by Saint Mary Euphrasia Pelletier, dedicated their lives to helping young women in need. Their first home in Buenos Aires was a small rented house on Avenida Independencia. In 1886, thanks to the tireless efforts of Mother María de San Agustín, the congregation established a permanent presence. A benefactor, Isabel Armstrong de Elortondo, offered them a larger house on Avenida Belgrano. This became their new headquarters. It also housed the burgeoning novitiate. But space was tight. Mother San Agustin appealed to her benefactors once more. Cayetana de Morris generously donated land in the Caballito neighborhood. This land became the final home of the congregation. The convent was slowly built between 1890 and 1894, funded by donations and loans. Later, the Capilla Jesús Buen Pastor was constructed next to the convent. The cornerstone was laid in 1894. The church itself, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was consecrated in 1907. The Capilla Jesús Buen Pastor served the congregation for almost a century. In 1996, the nuns ceded the chapel to the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires. It was then established as a parish church. This decision was influenced by the growing spiritual needs of the local community. The Capilla Jesús Buen Pastor, once a private sanctuary, became a vital part of Caballito’s religious landscape.
