In 1973, a simple baseball field nestled in the Logan Square community became something more. Churchill Field Park, once a privately owned lot, became a public space. The Chicago Park District, urged by the Dana Civic Association, acquired the land. This 1.39-acre park, located on Damen Avenue, four blocks south of Armitage Avenue, boasts a junior baseball field and a dog-friendly area. Churchill Field Park isn’t just a neighborhood park. It’s an access point to The 606. This elevated recreational trail follows the old Bloomingdale rail line. It stretches from Ashland to Ridgeway. Churchill Field Park carries a piece of Chicago’s history. The park’s name is a nod to M.E. Churchill, who subdivided nearby property in the 1890s. The name also references Churchill Street, which borders the park’s southern edge. In 1976, the city officially closed the right-of-way to Bloomingdale Avenue, incorporating it into the park. The park district renovated the baseball field, adding permanent bleachers. To shield the field from traffic and the nearby elevated train tracks, trees were planted in 1990. The Near Northwest Neighborhood Network proposed the name “Churchill Field Park” a year later, solidifying its place in the community. Today, Churchill Field Park stands as a testament to the power of community advocacy and the city’s commitment to green spaces. It’s a place where residents can enjoy a baseball game, walk their dogs, or access the expansive 606 trail. Churchill Field Park, a small patch of green with a big history, welcomes all who visit.
