“Did anyone bring their appetite for knowledge? Because we’re standing at the heart of Paris’s student life, Boulevard Saint-Michel!” Boulevard Saint-Michel, often affectionately shortened to ‘Boul’Mich,’ is one of the two main arteries of the Latin Quarter. This lively boulevard stretches from the Seine River all the way to the edge of the Jardin du Luxembourg. This iconic street wasn’t always here. It was carved through the heart of the city in the mid-1800s under the direction of Baron Haussmann. That’s the man behind those characteristic wide boulevards and grand architecture Paris is famous for. Now, while the cafes and bookshops lining the boulevard are a student’s haven today, did you know that Boulevard Saint-Michel played host to a group of rebellious poets known as the ‘Vilains Bonhommes’? These ‘naughty fellows,’ including a young Arthur Rimbaud, met in a hotel right here on this very boulevard. They’d drink, smoke, recite poetry, and generally cause a stir with their avant-garde verse. They even mocked the established Parnassian poets, often in quite scandalous ways.
