A humble house transformed. That’s the story of Capilla Ntra Sra de Itati. This unassuming chapel in Almagro holds a fascinating history. It wasn’t always a place of worship. Once it was a family home then a boarding house for the Catholic Young Workers’ Federation.
The transformation began in the 1970s. A family journeyed to Itati Corrientes. They made a plea to the Virgin. Their wish was granted. In gratitude they donated their home. The Curia agreed to their generous proposal. The house became a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Itati.
Father Eduardo Gonzalez became the first priest. He oversaw the initial cleaning and renovations. The front of the house was prepared for its new purpose. The official inauguration took place on November 24 1979. Monsignor Juan Carlos Aramburu attended. A small statue of the Virgin formed the first altar.
The chapel’s simple architecture is striking. It has a single nave. A glazed wall behind the altar opens to a patio garden. Statues of various saints line the walls. A glass-encased image of Our Lady of Sorrows stands out. Opposite is a moving depiction of Jesus on the Cross. Mary sits at his feet. The chapel also holds several more images of Our Lady of Itati. One near the entrance another near the altar.
The original building was expanded. A nearby religious school donated items. These included the Sacred Heart and a Christ figure on the altar. The priest’s living quarters were above. This section had to be demolished. A new design was made. A simple rustic style was chosen. Facilities for worshippers were added. These included bathrooms and a new altar.
Father Gonzalez served for six years. Father Fernando Echevarria succeeded him. He stayed for 33 years. Under his care the chapel was completed. Feasts honoring the Virgin began. A large hall for celebrations was built later.
Today Capilla Ntra Sra de Itati is a vibrant center of faith. It serves a large community. Daily masses are celebrated. Children prepare for their First Communion and Confirmation. Adult catechesis is also provided. Baptisms are held regularly. The Eucharist minister visits the elderly and sick. Charitable activities offer clothing and food to those in need. An annual pilgrimage to Itati brings donations. Even a rainbow appeared during a past procession. The chapel stands as a testament to faith community and transformation. It is a place of quiet beauty and spiritual strength. A true gem in Almagro.
