Established in 2001 SMK Batu Maung initially housed 211 students. These students were spread across five classes. The school operated within SK Permatang Damar Laut’s building. It used the space in the afternoons. The school even had the option to convert some rooms into offices. Tuan Hj Ramli bin Din served as the first principal. He was supported by fourteen teachers and four support staff.
SMK Batu Maung quickly grew. Its student body swelled to 380 by 2002. The teaching staff also expanded to twenty-one members. A significant milestone arrived on January 27 2003. On that day SMK Batu Maung moved into its own building. This impressive building featured two three-story blocks. It also included three four-story blocks and a two-story workshop block.
The school’s expansion wasn’t just about bricks and mortar. The number of students continued to climb. By 2009 SMK Batu Maung had a total of 945 students. This included 476 boys and 469 girls. The school employed 63 teachers at that time. Later in 2020 the student population decreased to 506. The number of teachers also fell to 53.
