Amidst the bustling cityscape of Budapest lies Nagyzugló, a district brimming with captivating stories. Nagyzugló wasn’t always an independent entity. Originally, when Budapest was formed in 1873, Nagyzugló’s area was split between the 6th and 7th districts. Later, in the 1890s, a piece of the 8th district, Rákosfalva, even joined the 10th district. It wasn’t until 1930 that the decision was made to create Zugló, and it officially became independent on October 1, 1935. It was initially called Rákosváros, spanning almost 19 square kilometers and housing 67,000 residents. Today, Nagyzugló encompasses eight distinct areas: Városliget, Herminamező, Nagy-Zugló, Kis-Zugló, Alsórákos, Törökőr, Istvánmező, and Rákosfalva. Each area has a unique history. For example, Nagyzugló itself has seen several name changes. It started as Nagy-Szugló in 1873. It merged with Kis-Szugló in 1930 and became simply Zugló. Finally, it reclaimed the name Nagyzugló in 1992. Today, it is primarily residential, with buildings from the 1950s and some charming detached houses from the 1940s. Nagyzugló’s development took off in the mid-20th century. This is reflected in its architecture, with many residential buildings dating back to the 1950s. Two smaller areas within Nagyzugló showcase detached houses built in the 1940s, adding to the district’s charm. These residential areas are bordered by major roads like Nagy Lajos király útja, Örs vezér tere, Kerepesi út, Róna utca, and Egressy út. They define the modern character of this fascinating part of Zugló.
