The salty air stings my nostrils. Weymouth South Beach stretches before me. A vast expanse of sand meets the restless Manukau Harbour.

This isn’t just any beach. Weymouth South Beach holds a fascinating history. For nearly twenty years a public health warning kept people away. Polluted waters made swimming unsafe. Illegal wastewater connections caused the problem. Damaged pipes added to the issue.

But thanks to the Manurewa Local Board Watercare and the Auckland Council that’s changed. They tracked down illegal connections. They repaired damaged pipes. They enforced regulations. Now Weymouth South Beach is safe again. A remarkable achievement. A victory for clean water.

Imagine the early settlers. They named this area Waimāhia “the muffled waters”. The harbour’s sounds distorted in unexpected ways. Then in 1857 the area was surveyed. Property sales began in 1864. The name Weymouth might have come from the Māori name. Or perhaps it was a sentimental nod to the English coastal resort.

Weymouth was once an important ferry location. The Karaka ferry connected Weymouth to Karaka. This shortcut avoided a long detour via Drury. It provided a direct route to Waiuku. A private ferry service may have existed as early as 1856. The official service launched in 1860. It closed in 1880.

There were plans for a bridge between Weymouth and Karaka as early as 1872. By the early 20th century Weymouth had become a popular holiday spot. An annual regatta took place here. The fertile alluvial soil attracted Chinese immigrants in the 1920s. They established thriving market gardens.

Weymouth’s oyster farm was a local success story. It supplied Auckland restaurants and fish markets. The Weymouth wharf opened in 1914. The Weymouth Memorial Hall built in 1926 later became public property.

Weymouth was isolated until the 1970s. The development of Clendon Park brought significant changes. A defined boundary between the two suburbs was established in 1990 by the Weymouth Residents & Ratepayers Association.

Today Weymouth South Beach thrives. Families enjoy the sand and surf. The beach is safe. The water is clean. The community is vibrant. This beach shows the power of perseverance. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of those who fought for its revitalization. Weymouth South Beach is a place of renewal and recreation. A perfect spot to relax and enjoy the beauty of Auckland.
