Long ago in the heart of Rio de Janeiro a humble school stood. This was the beginning of Colégio. It was more than just a school. It was the heart of the community. Professor José Teodoro Burlamaqui established this school in 1860. He was the only public school teacher in the entire region. His school was so important it gave its name to the neighborhood. The road leading to his school became known as Estrada do Colégio.
Colégio today is a bustling neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone. It’s a fascinating blend of residential areas and industry. Large factories such as Teadit Vulcan Ciba and Koleta stand alongside homes and schools. The area is served by the Line 2 Metro station. This opened in 1998. It was built on the old Rio D’ Ouro Railroad line. The original Colégio train station was opened in 1883. It was rebuilt in 1930 and closed 40 years later.

It stands on Avenida Pastor Martin Luther King Jr.
Even Olympic medalist Robson Caetano grew up in Colégio. Specifically in the area known as “Sangue Areia”. His story is just one example of the many lives shaped by this special place. The Colégio neighborhood is a testament to resilience and community. It shows the constant evolution of Rio de Janeiro. From a humble school to a thriving neighborhood Colégio continues to grow and change. It still remains a place where history and modern life intertwine.
