Standing tall against the wall of Greyfriars Kirkyard, the Covenanters War memorial tells a story of faith, defiance, and sacrifice. Its inscription, carved in stone, speaks of those who stood against tyranny. The inscription reads: “Halt, passenger, take heed what you do see / This tomb doth shew, for what some men did do / Here lies interr’d the dust of those who stood / ‘Gainst perjury, resisting unto blood.” This monument commemorates the Covenanters, a group of Scottish Presbyterians who fought against the imposition of the English Episcopal church on Scotland in the 17th century. The Covenanters believed in the Bible as the sole authority for faith and practice. Driven by their convictions, they faced persecution, imprisonment, and even death. The inscription goes on to mention the famous Guthrie, who, on 1st June 1661, was beheaded for his beliefs. Throughout the turbulent years of the Covenanters War, from 1661 to 1688, over 18,000 individuals were persecuted. This memorial is a poignant reminder of their unwavering commitment to their beliefs, even in the face of brutal oppression.
