Can you imagine a school that started as a night school for grown-ups? That’s the story of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Shang Wu. Originally, it wasn’t even a primary school. Back in the early 1900s, it was a trade school in Gelugor, teaching business management to adults in the evenings. By 1912, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Shang Wu expanded to include classes for children. These classes were initially held in the mornings. But as demand grew, afternoon sessions were added by 1938. The school thrived until the Japanese invasion in 1941, forcing its closure. After the war, in 1945, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Shang Wu reopened its doors, resuming both morning and afternoon sessions. With over 500 students, it sought government aid to support its operations and teacher training. The 1950s brought a decline in student enrollment. Many families involved in the goldsmith trade relocated to Butterworth, drawn by its Free Port status. To survive, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Shang Wu needed a new home. It found one thanks to the La Salle Christian Brothers, who offered the land of the former La Salle School. Construction of the new building finished in 1970, and in 1971, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Shang Wu began its new chapter at its current location along Jalan Air Itam. Today, the school is easily accessible by several Rapid Penang bus routes, including 201, 202, 203, 204, 306, and 502. From a humble trade school to a bustling primary school, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Shang Wu’s journey reflects the resilience and adaptability of education in Penang.
