“Did you hear about the close election in Fieldway Ward?” a local whispered, leaning against a lamppost. Fieldway Ward! A place that holds a unique place in Croydon’s political history. This ward, encompassing part of the New Addington estate, wasn’t always divided. Before 1978, a single ward simply called “New Addington” represented the entire area. But as the population grew with the construction of the Fieldway estate, a decision was made. The area was divided into two separate wards. Thus, Fieldway Ward was born. However, the political leanings of the people remained largely unchanged. Fieldway Ward, much like its neighboring New Addington wards, has been a Labour stronghold for decades. In fact, between 1982 and 1986, these wards were the sole providers of Labour councillors in the entire London Borough of Croydon. Imagine that, five Labour councillors out of a total of 70! The loyalty to the Labour party in Fieldway Ward remained strong, even when faced with challenges from other parties. Even with the rise of other political forces, Fieldway Ward has consistently painted itself red on the electoral map.
