The aroma of freshly baked bread. It wafts through the air a delicious promise. This is the Backhaus Rethorn in Bremen.

Picture this: You stand before a charming building a testament to history and community. This isn’t just any bakery. The Backhaus Rethorn is a beloved landmark. It’s a place where generations have gathered sharing stories and the warmth of freshly baked goods.

Originally built on a farm the Backhaus Rethorn first appeared in the land registry in 1842. For almost a century it served its purpose baking bread for the local community. The oven was fired up around 430 am every baking day. This was quite a feat. It took hours to reach the perfect temperature around 240 degrees Celsius. After many years of use however the Backhaus eventually fell into disrepair. It almost disappeared. Facing demolition the Backhaus received a reprieve.

In 1980 architect Otto Schröder saved it. He carefully dismantled the structure storing each piece. Then in 2002 the Rethorn community pulled together. They lovingly rebuilt their Backhaus. It took about 1800 hours of dedicated work. Today the Backhaus Rethorn stands as a symbol of resilience. It’s also a meeting place for all ages.

Twice a year on the Sunday before Easter and the first Sunday in October the Backhaus Rethorn opens its doors. These are the Backtage baking days. The air fills with the irresistible scent of fresh bread and butterkuchen. About 160 loaves of bread and 20 trays of sweet treats are produced. The local bakery Meyer Mönchhof helps with the baking.

The Backhaus Rethorn isn’t just about the bread. It’s about community. It’s a place for neighbors to gather. People chat over coffee and freshly baked treats. It embodies the spirit of Rethorn a true community gem. It’s a place where the past meets the present. The Backhaus Rethorn is a place to savor both delicious bread and treasured memories. It’s a place where the scent of warm bread lingers long after you leave.
