Consider, if you will, a vibrant red church rising amidst Shanghai’s bustling streets. This is Holy Trinity Church. It stands as a testament to a rich and complex history. Holy Trinity Church also known as Shanghai Sheng Sanyi Tang is a Protestant church in Shanghai’s Huangpu District. It formerly was an Anglican church.
Let’s step back in time to the mid-19th century. The British community needed a place to worship. Before Holy Trinity, services were held in the British Consulate. Thomas Chaye Beale donated land for a proper church. The first structure was not so good. Its roof collapsed after heavy rain in 1850.
A new church was needed. Sir George Gilbert Scott designed the current Holy Trinity Church in a Gothic Revival style. William Kidner modified the design to fit the budget and accommodate more people. The foundation stone was laid in 1866. It was a grand Masonic ceremony. Finally, Holy Trinity Church was consecrated in 1869.
Did you know that Holy Trinity Church faced Jerusalem? It is roughly to the west. In 1914, the church acquired the largest organ in Asia. J. W. Walker & Sons Ltd of London supplied it.
Holy Trinity Church became known as Holy Trinity Cathedral. It was the cathedral of the Anglican Church in China. Locals often called it the Red Church. Holy Trinity also had a boys’ school. The author J. G. Ballard attended it. His novel Empire of the Sun features the school.
Imagine the Cultural Revolution. Holy Trinity’s spire was removed. The church was converted into a cinema. A stage was installed. The brickwork was covered in plaster.
But Holy Trinity Church was not forgotten. Peter Hibbard called it a central feature of British life. A careful restoration began. Zhang Ming Architectural Design Firm led the project. Carved teak pews came from Zhejiang province. Holy Trinity reopened in December 2017.
Today, Holy Trinity Church serves as the headquarters of the Three-Self Patriotic Movement. The church complex was handed back in 2006. It stands as a symbol of faith, resilience, and architectural beauty. Its history echoes through Shanghai. It is a place where past and present intertwine.
