Watford Museum opened its doors on March 14, 1982. Terry Scott, a Watford native and comedian, officially opened it. The museum is housed in a Grade II-listed Georgian town house. This building has a rich history of its own.
Before becoming a museum, it was part of Benskins Brewery. Records show a brewery on this site as far back as 1750. Around 1775, the Dyson family built the mansion house. Joseph Benskin bought the house in 1867. It continued as a brewery until 1957. In 1952, English Heritage listed the mansion house as Grade II.
What can you see inside Watford Museum? The collections are diverse. Fine art is a highlight, including the Cassiobury Collection. This collection features works from Cassiobury House. The Earl of Essex once owned this house. You can find paintings by John Wootton and J. M. W. Turner here. William Henry Hunt’s painting of the Winter Dining Room is also present. Portraits of the Earls of Essex are included.
The museum also displays art from Dutch and Flemish schools. You’ll find works by Adam François van der Meulen and Pieter Neeffs the Elder. Turner, Peter Lely, and Joshua Reynolds are also featured. Grants from the Art Fund have assisted in acquiring many pieces. These include works by Henry Edridge and William Blake.
Sculptures are another key part of the Watford Museum. Bronze, copper, and steel works are displayed. Mary Bromet and Jacob Epstein are among the artists.
Displays also document Watford’s history. The development of Watford Junction railway station is covered. Watford Football Club has its own gallery. Here, you can see sports memorabilia and an Elton John stage costume.
The Watford Museum holds an archive of documents and photos. These relate to Watford townsfolk and local government. They also cover nobility and businesses. Imagine the stories these archives could tell.
Around a third of the Watford Museum’s collection is on display. The museum has a contemporary art space. Space 2 gallery showcases local and national artists.
Watford Museum is located on the lower High Street. It’s near the Harlequin Shopping Centre. The nearest station is Watford High Street.

In fact, the Watford Museum was temporarily closing in October 2023 for refurbishment of Watford Town Hall and will move into the facilities for about two years.
