Why did the school bells of Former St Andrew’s CofE Secondary School fall silent? Right here on Warrington Road stands a building steeped in history. This isn’t just any school. Former St Andrew’s CofE Secondary School boasts a legacy stretching back to 1861. Founded by the Reverend Fitzroy John Fitzwygram it initially occupied rented rooms. He aimed to educate the working class empowering them not simply giving them handouts.

Fitzwygram a generous man secured funding mostly from his own family. The Croydon Times reported his ambitious project. He envisioned a self-supporting school. Even the poorest would pay a small fee instilling a work ethic. This differed from the local ragged school offering free education but often of poor quality.

Permanent buildings opened in 1862 separate for boys and girls. Tragedy struck. The headmaster of the boys’ school died of smallpox. The girls’ school thrived. Fanny Thornton a young and dedicated teacher led the school. The boys school later closed due to low enrollment numbers. This is why the original building in Southbridge road had to be extended and rebuilt later.

The school continued to evolve. In 1927 it became a single school accommodating children from infants to age 11. Expansion led to further rebuilding and eventually the school accommodated students up to age 14.

The Croydon Flyover’s construction in 1964 necessitated another move to this location on Warrington Road. The school became a comprehensive in 1978 adding Latin to its curriculum. It even achieved specialist status for music in 2006.

Despite these successes enrollment declined in the 2010s. Financial instability and a failing Ofsted report led to its closure in 2020. It’s now a temporary home for Coombe Wood School a chapter in its ongoing story. Former St Andrew’s CofE Secondary School’s legacy though remains a testament to education’s enduring power. It’s a reminder that even the quietest buildings whisper tales of ambition progress and change.
