“Rest in peace,” whispers the wind as it sweeps through Ereveld Menteng Pulo. This Dutch war cemetery stands as a serene tribute to fallen heroes. It offers a moment of reflection amidst Jakarta’s bustling cityscape. Ereveld Menteng Pulo is the most prominent of the seven war cemeteries in Indonesia.

Here, national commemorations occur on the 4th of May and the 15th of August. These days mark National Remembrance Day and the end of World War II in Asia. Menteng Pulo war cemetery serves as a significant place of remembrance. It honors around 4,000 war victims from World War II and the Indonesian National Revolution.

Lieutenant General S.H. Spoor rests here. He laid the first stone of the war cemetery. Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Ir. H. A. van Oerle designed the cemetery. He meticulously developed it in phases. The Simultaan church and the columbarium are at its heart. They symbolize remembrance and reflection.

Initially, this cemetery was on Jakarta’s outskirts. Palm trees surrounded it, a tranquil spot seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Jakarta’s rapid growth enveloped the once-remote location. Towering skyscrapers now surround the cemetery, placing it in the city’s heart.

The site’s transformation began at the central mound. A concrete building, once belonging to the Japanese, stood here. After its dismantling, Ir. H.A. van Oerle began construction. He turned it into a sacred ground of commemoration.

Lieutenant General S.H. Spoor officially marked the cemetery’s establishment on 8 December 1947. As Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army, he emphasized the diverse backgrounds of the war victims. Equal respect is given to all.

The reburials represent a pivotal aspect of the cemetery’s history. The Graves Registration Unit of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army initially developed 22 war cemeteries across Indonesia. In the 1960s, these were merged into the current seven war cemeteries in Java, including Menteng Pulo.

This cemetery saw the reburial of war victims from various locations. These include Bandjermasin, Tarakan, Menado, Palembang, Balikpapan, Makassar, and Tjililitan. These individuals’ final resting places receive the utmost care. Families can easily pay tribute to their loved ones.

The first civilians interred here were a couple. The husband and wife, Mr. and Mrs. van Harreveld, were buried on 14 December 1946. Infantry soldier W. van Kammen was the first military burial on 11 February 1947.

Lieutenant General Spoor was laid to rest here among his men. He passed away on 25 May 1949. These burials mark the beginning of a sanctuary. History, reflection, and respect converge.

The Simultaan church stands as a beacon of unity and remembrance. Constructed from white plastered brick, its structure offers a quiet place of contemplation. Completed in 1950, it opens for national commemorations and special occasions. The church features a simple yet poignant altar. It invites visitors to reflect on the sacrifices commemorated here.

Symbols of life and God’s creation adorn the Simultaan church. Wrought iron shaped into meaningful symbols adorns the doors. The right side features birds, animals native to Indonesia, and trees. The left side depicts fish, plants, and fruits.

Inside, along the patterned wall, are evocative symbols. An hourglass signifies the passage of time. A butterfly represents the psyche or soul. It is surrounded by an ouroboros. This serpent eating its own tail is an ancient emblem of eternity.

The towering bell has been relocated across the church. It is actively used during Dutch national commemorations. Its sound resonates as a reminder of gratitude.

Adjacent to the Simultaan church is the columbarium. White round pillars uphold its corridors. It houses 754 urns containing the ashes of Dutch prisoners of war. U.S. troops discovered these urns. They were brought to Indonesia to be placed here.

Mosaic windows created by C. Stauthamer carry deep symbolic meaning. In the columbarium, they represent the brotherhood between Indonesia and the Netherlands. This sacred section invites visitors to ponder stories of courage and sacrifice.

The Aviation Monument highlights the role of aviators. It features a propeller from a fallen plane from the Indonesian National Revolution. This section is the final resting place for many victims from the Cililitan Air Base.

The Glodok Memorial commemorates war victims interned at the Glodok camps. The statue of a child symbolizes the suffering of children during wartime.

A replica of the Burma-Thailand Cross pays tribute to those who perished building the railway. The urn serves as a memorial for the unknown soldiers. Two plaques bear the names of soldiers whose remains were never found.

This is Ereveld Menteng Pulo. A place where stories of war, resilience, and unity converge. Take a moment to reflect on the past. Let it inspire a future of peace.
