Is this where the two rivers meet? Fort Snelling State Park sits at the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers. The Dakota people considered this place, Bdóte, the center of the Earth. It held deep spiritual importance long before European settlers arrived. In 1805, Lieutenant Zebulon Pike, exploring for President Jefferson, negotiated a land purchase here with the Dakota. This treaty site now bears his name, Pike Island. Construction of Fort Snelling began in 1820, perched on the bluffs overlooking this important meeting point. The fort, now a National Historic Landmark, played a significant role in the development of Minnesota. It served as a frontier outpost, a training ground for soldiers during multiple wars, and sadly, a place of confinement during the Dakota War of 1862. The park itself opened much later, in 1962. Fort Snelling State Park was created to protect the natural beauty of the river bottoms, a stark contrast to the bustling city growing around it. Today, you can walk the same trails used by soldiers, explore the reconstructed fort, and reflect on the complex history etched into this landscape. The echoes of those who came before, both Dakota and settler, whisper in the rustling leaves and the flowing waters of Fort Snelling State Park.
