Stretching four kilometers like a green ribbon, Vigerslevparken awaits. It runs from Damhussøen in the north to Valbyparken in the south. Imagine this park’s story beginning in 1929.

Vigerslevparken was created by Copenhagen Municipality. The work continued until 1963. Its name comes from Vigar. He was the first known man to build a farm in the area around 400 AD. Vigar gave his name to the village of Vigarslev.

The Høje Taastrup railway line cuts through Vigerslevparken. The park follows Harrestrup Å. This forms the municipal boundary with Hvidovre. The northernmost part of the park follows the border with Rødovre. The Holbækmotorvejen also cuts through the park. Since 2020, the Folehavebroen bridge carries cyclists and pedestrians over the motorway.

These cuts make Vigerslevparken somewhat disjointed. You will find football fields in several places. Near Damhus Sø, the old waterworks site has a water workshop. Here, people learn about drinking water. They also examine water properties and water quality.

Vigerslevparken is more than just a park. It is a historical landscape. It connects communities. It provides space for recreation and education.

In 2010, Vigerslevparken gained protected status. This included Damhus Sø, Damhusengen, and Krogebjergparken. This protection ensures the preservation of this green space. It is vital for future generations.

Consider Vigerslevparken’s role in Copenhagen’s history. It started as fields around a village. Now, it is a vital part of the city’s green infrastructure.

Think about the people who have walked here. They sought relaxation. They found community. They connected with nature. Vigerslevparken has been their refuge.

The park offers a varied experience. From sports fields to the water workshop. There’s something for everyone. This reflects Copenhagen’s commitment to providing green spaces for its citizens.

Take a moment to appreciate the park’s design. The way it integrates with the surrounding landscape. The way it provides access to nature. Even with the Holbækmotorvejen cutting through.

Vigerslevparken is a testament to urban planning. It balances development with nature. It creates a space where people and nature can coexist. This long green belt offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

As you walk through Vigerslevparken, think about its history. From Vigar’s farm to its protected status. The park has evolved. But it has always remained a vital part of the community. Its story is written in its landscape. It is in the laughter of children playing. It is in the quiet moments of reflection. Vigerslevparken is a place where memories are made. It is a place where nature thrives.
