Four concrete emplacements stand before you. This is Paradis Batteri. Built between 1886 and 1890 it’s a relic of Copenhagen’s fortifications. Paradis Batteri is one of ten permanent batteries along Vestvolden. It’s named after the Paradisgaard estate on whose land it was built.

Imagine the cannons. Four 15 cm pieces. They once guarded this part of Copenhagen. Their barrels aimed outward ready to repel any invasion. Each emplacement had a separate traverser. This prevented fire spreading between cannons.

Paradis Batteri isn’t just about the guns. There’s a central ammunition magazine. It’s a masterpiece of engineering. A self-contained room separated from the outer walls by a meter of air. This ingenious design protected the ammunition from moisture and condensation. A hand-cranked elevator brought the shells to the firing positions.

The soldiers stationed here were part of a wider network. They were ready to defend against attack. Their role was long-range combat. They were expected to engage the enemy at 6-8 kilometers. Paradis Batteri played a critical role in that defense.

Now look around you. You can practically feel the history. This quiet place echoes with the sounds of distant cannons and the march of soldiers. It speaks of a time when this part of Copenhagen faced a very real threat. Paradis Batteri stands as a reminder of that past. A testament to the dedication of those who defended the city. It is a quiet sentinel a legacy of the past.
