Wow. Look at that Kiddieland sign. It’s a relic isn’t it? A piece of Chicago history right here.

This isn’t just any sign. This is the Kiddieland sign. It stands as a testament to a beloved amusement park that charmed generations of Chicagoans. For almost 80 years families created happy memories at Kiddieland. It opened in 1929 a small venture started by Arthur Fritz. He began with just six ponies offering rides during the tough times of the Great Depression.

Can you imagine? Six ponies. That’s it. But Fritz’s vision was big. A few years later he added miniature gasoline-powered cars. These weren’t just any cars they were given away by a Chicago newspaper to promote subscriptions. Smart move by Fritz. He transformed that giveaway into an attraction!

Kiddieland grew. The park expanded adding rides like the German Carousel two miniature steam locomotives the Little Auto Ride the Roto Whip and the Ferris Wheel. Then came the 1950s a major expansion including the iconic Little Dipper roller coaster. That coaster was a big deal. It’s still around today having been moved to Six Flags Great America.

The park wasn’t just about rides. It was about family. It was a place where generations of families made memories. The park passed down through the Fritz family even after Arthur’s death in 1967. His grandchildren took over in 1977 and continued its legacy for decades more. They added even more rides including a log flume and a water coaster.

Sadly Kiddieland closed in 2009. A dispute over the land led to its demolition. But this sign survived. It’s a symbol of a time when simpler pleasures brought pure joy to families. So next time you see this Kiddieland sign remember the laughter the thrills the memories it represents. It’s a little piece of Chicago’s heart.
