From a contaminated refinery to a vibrant green space, that’s the story of Parque Bicentenario. This park in Mexico City isn’t just a park. It’s a testament to transformation and resilience. Inaugurated in 2010 by President Felipe Calderón, Parque Bicentenario marked a pivotal moment in Mexico City’s history, a celebration of 200 years of independence. This isn’t just any green space. It’s a sprawling 55-hectare expanse, a breath of fresh air ten times larger than the Zócalo, the city’s main square. Parque Bicentenario stands as the second largest “lung” in this bustling metropolis. Imagine strolling through themed gardens, each reflecting a different climate and vegetation type of Mexico. Picture an experimental chinampa, a traditional floating garden, alongside an artificial lake teeming with life. Perhaps you’d stumble upon the orchid garden, a burst of color and fragrance. Or maybe you’d find yourself captivated by a performance in the park’s auditorium. Parque Bicentenario even boasts various sports facilities, catering to every interest. Originally the site of the Azcapotzalco Refinery, this land was far from idyllic. The refinery, closed in 1991 due to severe pollution, left behind a contaminated legacy. Yet, from this scarred landscape, a vision emerged. In 2007, after years of abandonment, the land was ceded to the Federal Government. An extensive environmental remediation project began, a collaborative effort involving state and para-state entities, universities, and international advisors. The meticulous work of landscape architect Mario Schjetnan, the mastermind behind other urban green spaces like Tezozomoc Park and Xochimilco Ecological Park, brought this vision to life. Parque Bicentenario emerged as a symbol of renewal, a place where nature and culture intertwine. But the story doesn’t end there. Parque Bicentenario continues to evolve. While its management has shifted over the years, raising concerns about maintenance and accessibility, its essence remains. This park, born from a legacy of pollution and neglect, stands as a beacon of hope and transformation. It’s a reminder of the power of vision, collaboration, and the enduring spirit of Mexico City.
