“The longest journey starts with a single step.” That old saying certainly applies to the Route Nationale 34. We are standing at the start of this former national road. The Route Nationale 34 took travelers from the heart of Paris all the way to Esternay in the Marne region. That’s a journey of 97 kilometers! The Route Nationale 34 has a long and fascinating history. It was established in 1824, built upon the foundations of the old Route Impériale 39. For over a century, the Route Nationale 34 served as a vital artery connecting Paris to the eastern regions of France. Imagine the horse-drawn carriages and early automobiles that once traversed this very route! The road went through several transformations over the years. Initially, it stretched even further, reaching Vitry-le-François. However, in 1949, the section between Esternay and Vitry-le-François was integrated into the Route Nationale 4. This change shortened the Route Nationale 34 to its final length of 96 kilometers. Eventually, in 2006, the entire Route Nationale 34 was decommissioned as a national road. Today, it exists as various departmental roads, each segment carrying a piece of its history.
