“Did you know this mosque predates the Sidoarjo Regency itself?” I ask. Masjid Jami’ Al Abror is a silent witness to centuries of history. It is a testament to faith and community in Sidoarjo.

Welcome to Masjid Jami’ Al Abror. It is a place where history whispers from every corner. This sacred space is more than just a mosque. It is a symbol of Sidoarjo’s rich past.

Masjid Jami’ Al Abror was established in 1678. It was founded by Mbah Mulyadi. He was a cleric from Mataram. Mbah Mulyadi sought refuge in Sidoarjo. He was fleeing the unrest caused by King Amangkurat I. The king suspected clerics of plotting against him. Mbah Mulyadi found safety in Desa Suko. He then started building this mosque.

Initially, the Masjid Jami’ Al Abror was a humble structure. It was called Masjid Kauman. Mbah Mulyadi was aided by Mbah Badriyah, Mbah Muso, and Mbah Sayid Salim. These figures helped in its construction and development. The mosque served as a center for teaching. It was also a place for community gatherings. Locals learned about Islam. They were trained in the art of batik.

Interestingly, Masjid Jami’ Al Abror is older than Sidoarjo Regency. Sidoarjo was once known as Kabupaten Sidokare. It was part of the Surabaya Kadipaten. In 1859, the Dutch colonial government separated Sidokare from Surabaya. Sidokare became an independent government. Masjid Kauman had been a fixture long before this separation.

Over the years, Masjid Jami’ Al Abror has undergone renovations. A major renovation occurred between 2006 and 2009. The original structure was significantly altered. However, some original elements remain. The north side door is still there. The graves of Mbah Mulyadi and the other founders are also preserved.

Today, Masjid Jami’ Al Abror remains a vibrant place of worship. It is a destination for religious tourism. During the 1st Century NU celebrations in Sidoarjo, it served as a resting place for pilgrims. People still flock to this ancient mosque.

Muhammad Alfan, a caretaker of the Masjid Jami’ Al Abror, has stated that the mosque was renovated in 2007. At that time, Win Hendrarso was the Regent of Sidoarjo. The building was almost completely changed.

The story of Masjid Jami’ Al Abror is intertwined with Sidoarjo’s history. It represents the spread of Islam in the region. It marks the founding of the Sidoarjo Regency. The mosque stands as a reminder of the past.

As you leave Masjid Jami’ Al Abror, remember its story. It is a story of faith, resilience, and community. The mosque stands tall as a testament to Sidoarjo’s enduring spirit. It is a place where history and faith converge.
