Completed in 1948, the murals sparked controversy, with some questioning Refregier’s artistic style and political leanings. The debate even reached the halls of Congress, where calls for their destruction were made. Yet, they survived, a testament to the power of art and its ability to ignite dialogue. The Rincon Annex’s transformation in the 1980s into the Rincon Center marked a new chapter. The original building was crowned with two additional stories, and a breathtaking five-story atrium was carved into its core. A 200-foot skylight bathes the space in natural light, illuminating a bustling food court below. A new mixed-use building sprung up alongside, housing offices, apartments, and a new post office.
