Beneath the Parisian sky, Rue Roland Foucard stretches out before us. This seemingly ordinary street holds a hidden connection to a giant of French theatre. Rue Roland Foucard, nestled in Champigny-sur-Marne, whispers tales of Jean Danet, a name synonymous with the Tréteaux de France. Danet, born into a family of sailors and priests, unexpectedly found his calling in the world of theatre. He began his theatrical journey directing a play called “Gardiens de Phare” for a sailor’s home. Later, in Paris, he honed his craft under the tutelage of Maurice Escande. Danet graced the stage and screen in numerous roles during the 1950s. His portrayal of Phoebus alongside Gina Lollobrigida and Anthony Quinn in the 1956 film “Notre-Dame de Paris” brought him widespread recognition. But his true legacy lies in the creation of the Tréteaux de France. In 1959, Danet invested his earnings into five trucks, trailers converted into caravans, and seating for his audience. With a stage designed by René Allio, basic lighting, and a sound system, he embarked on his first tour. It was a resounding success. By 1962, the Tréteaux de France had traveled 30,000 km and performed over 500 shows, earning them their first subsidy and the title of Permanent Troupe. Under André Malraux’s ministry in 1965, their 400-seat tent was replaced with an 800-seat one, and in 1968, a 1,000-seat tent was added. The Tréteaux de France, under Danet’s direction until 2001, became a national dramatic center in 1974. Danet’s dedication to decentralizing theatre brought classic plays to audiences across France. So, as we stand on Rue Roland Foucard, let us remember Jean Danet, the man who brought the magic of theatre to the far corners of France. His legacy lives on, not only in the street that bears a related name but in the hearts of those who experienced the wonder of the Tréteaux de France.
